چکیده

The container loading problem consists of packing boxes of various sizes into available containers in a way which optimizes some objective function. The container loading is the core of many problems which arise in distribution and logistics. As the amount of distributed goods grows and with it the need for automation of distribution processes, also the need for computational models and methods for effective container loading increases. In this paper we consider the single container loading problem in which the number of boxes to be packed and the order of packing are known in advance. We give a description of different formulations of the problem as well as an introductory study of methods for its solution. The formulation of the problem also includes aspects often ignored in research literature like rotation of boxes, stability of packing etc. We also give directions for further development to make solution methods applicable in real life.

Quay Cranes and Yard Trucks Scheduling Problem at Container Terminals

A bi-objective mathematical model is developed to simultaneously consider the quay crane and yard truck scheduling problems at container terminals. Main real-world assumptions, such as quay cranes with non-crossing constraints, quay cranes’ safety margins and precedence constraints are considered in this model. This integrated approach leads to better efficiency and productivity at container te...

A GA-based Heuristic for the Interrelated Container Selection Loading Problems

An integrated heuristic approach based on genetic algorithms (GAs) is proposed for solving the container selection and loading problems. The GA for container selection solves a two-dimensional knapsack problem, determining a set of containers to minimize the transportation or shipment cost. The GA for container loading solves for the weighted coefficients in the evaluation functions that are ap...

Modeling the Container Selection for Freight Transportation: Case Study of Iran

Significant advantages of intermodal and containerized transport have increased the global interest to this mode of transportation. This growing interest is reflected in the annual volume of container cargo growth. However, the container transport inside Iran does not have a proper place. Comparing the count of containers entering and leaving ports with the statistics obtained from railway and ...

A heuristic for the container loading problem: A tertiary-tree-based dynamic space decomposition approach

Increasing fuel costs, post-911 security concerns, and economic globalization provide a strong incentive for container carriers to use available container space more efficiently, thereby minimizing the number of container trips and reducing socio-economic vulnerability. A heuristic algorithm based on a tertiary tree model is proposed to handle the container loading problem (CLP) with weakly het...

Comparison of AHP and FAHP for Selecting Yard Gantry Cranes in Marine Container Terminals

The time that containerships or transportation trucks spend in marine container terminals for loading and unloading their cargo is a real cost scenario which affects, not only the smooth operation of ports, but also affect the overall cost of container trade. The operators of shipping lines and container terminals are required to realize the importance of this issue and the costs associated wit...
